Complex & High-Performance Endorsements

Jesse Gonzalez, an independent CFI based in South Florida, provides complex and high-performance endorsements under 14 CFR § 61.31(e) and (f) at Fort Lauderdale Executive (KFXE), Pompano Beach (KPMP), and North Perry (KHWO). The endorsement plus the systems and procedures to actually fly the airplane, not just a signature.

Two separate endorsements

These are independent — an airplane can be one, both, or neither, and you only need the endorsement that applies.

  • High-performance — engine of more than 200 horsepower (§ 61.31(f)). Examples: Cessna 182, Cirrus SR22, Cessna T206H.
  • Complexretractable gear + flaps + controllable-pitch propeller, all three (§ 61.31(e)). Examples: Piper Arrow, Cessna 172RG, many retractable singles.

Both are one-time logbook endorsements with no minimum hour requirement — they're based on demonstrated proficiency, signed off by an authorized instructor.

How the training works

  • Aircraft systems, performance, and V-speeds briefed and understood
  • Emergency procedures specific to the airplane
  • Enough dual flight to operate the airplane safely and confidently
  • Insurance-required hours coordinated with your underwriter
  • Conducted in your aircraft, a coordinated rental — or, for high-performance, Jesse's Cessna T206H Turbo Stationair

Endorsements — frequently asked

What is a high-performance endorsement?

Under 14 CFR § 61.31(f), a high-performance airplane is one with an engine of more than 200 horsepower. To act as pilot in command of one, you need a one-time logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor certifying you received ground and flight training and are proficient. There's no minimum number of hours — it's based on proficiency.

What is a complex endorsement?

Under 14 CFR § 61.31(e), a complex airplane has retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller (all three). Acting as PIC of one requires a one-time endorsement after ground and flight training and a proficiency check by an authorized instructor. Like the high-performance endorsement, there's no minimum hour requirement.

Is the T206H complex or high-performance?

High-performance only. Jesse's Cessna T206H Turbo Stationair has a 310-horsepower engine, so it qualifies as high-performance (more than 200 hp) — but it has fixed landing gear, so it is not a complex airplane. The T206H is available to students for the high-performance endorsement and for instrument instruction.

How long does an endorsement take?

It depends on your experience and the airplane, because both endorsements are proficiency-based, not hour-based. Plan on ground time covering the aircraft's systems, performance, and V-speeds, plus enough flight training that you can operate the airplane safely and the instructor can sign you off in good conscience. Insurance often drives a minimum number of dual hours as well.

Can you do the training in my airplane?

Yes. Endorsement training is conducted in your aircraft, a coordinated rental, or — for the high-performance endorsement — in Jesse's Cessna T206H. If your insurance requires a set number of dual hours in make and model before solo, we coordinate the training to satisfy your underwriter.
